The Kindness and Leadership Retreat HOSA Students took part in September 26, 2007. The HOSA students were trained by the staff from Youth Frontiers to serve as small group leaders and team builders for elementary students. The elementary students were guided through a series of activities designed to incorporate the values of kindness, courage, respect, leadership and wisdom into their daily lives. Spring Lake High School- OEC Programs- Advsior: Mr. Bill Neiss

This holiday season, as we have done for the past eleven years,
the OEC Program at Spring Lake Park High School is raising money for the
Adopt-a-Family program. This service project is in cooperation with
Kinship of Minneapolis. Kinship works to pair up young people with
adult mentors throughout the year, but during the holidays connects
underprivileged families with organizations who want to help acquire
Christmas gifts for these children.

OEC students and staff collect donations from individuals and
businesses to purchase and wrap Christmas gifts for children who
otherwise would go without. Parents, who have trouble providing gifts
for their children apply to Kinship, then write out lists of what the
children have asked for, and Kinship passes those lists to us. What is
striking about the wish lists, is what they wish for. Many of the lists
have simple necessities like socks and t-shirts. Students, parents, and
staff then shop at a local store and purchase the gifts. We then spend
the evening at school wrapping each gift.

Last year we collected $4,109.13 and provided gifts for 70
children. Since our first year in 1995 when we raised $400.00 for the
Adopt-a-Family program, more of the community and the school have gotten
involved every year and we hope for more of the same this year. To date
we have raised just over $41,004.00 in twelve years.

Friday’s are HOSA days. The students are all working on their classroom HOSA projects, and some are also preparing that project for midwinter.  Career Health Display, HOSA bowl and Health Education are the most popular.

A recent speaker was Mike Stori from the VA who came and presented the Radiologic Technologist Program at the VA, and careers.

Washington DC

There were state officers from many states that went through team building and leadership activities as well as a chance to tour some of the History of Washington DC. The officer's advisors were invited along and were a part of the academy. The highlight was the day on the Hill and a chance to meet state Senators and Represenatives. It was the same time as the State Advsior's Management Conference so the state was represented well on the Hill. It was a blaze of Blue on Capital Hill on September 25th! Click here for photos...
